About the Client
KDDI is one of Japan's largest telecom providers, offering mobile, internet, and digital services to millions of consumers nationwide.
Business Context
Traditional telecom plans in Japan were fixed and required in-store onboarding, limiting flexibility and slowing user activation. A fully digital platform was required to enable pay-as-you-use plans with faster onboarding and no dependency on physical stores.
Challenges
Dynamic plan configuration limits
Plan configurations ("toppings") varied by user context and time, requiring real-time rendering without hardcoded logic.
Localization complexity across languages
The platform needed to support Japanese-first UX along with English and Chinese, including formatting, validation, and content variations.
Multi-partner integration variability
External integrations required handling multiple configurations without impacting core application logic or user flows.
UI performance under real-time updates
Rendering dynamic plans and pricing needed to remain responsive on mobile devices during high interaction flows.
Solutions We Implemented
API-driven dynamic UI rendering
UI components were driven by backend APIs, allowing plans and pricing ("toppings") to be configured and updated dynamically without frontend changes.
Locale-aware content delivery layer
A content management layer was introduced to serve localized text, formats, and validations based on user locale, ensuring consistency across languages.
Runtime-configurable UI architecture
UI behaviour, static content, and configurations were externalized and loaded at runtime, reducing dependency on code changes for updates.
Modular component-based UI system
Reusable components were designed for plan selection and checkout, ensuring consistency and reducing effort when introducing new offerings.
Impact
Enabled 100% digital onboarding
Users could complete onboarding and plan activation entirely online without visiting physical stores.
Reduced onboarding time to 5–10 minutes
Streamlined flows significantly reduced activation time compared to traditional processes.
Scaled platform to support millions of users
The system handled large-scale adoption while supporting dynamic plan configurations.
Improved mobile responsiveness
Optimized UI ensured responsive interactions even with real-time pricing and configuration changes.
Tech Stack Used
React.js
The backbone of the web, shaping digital landscapes with structure and semantics.
Node.js
Fast, event-driven runtime powering scalable backend services.
“The improved onboarding experience significantly reduced user drop-offs during the signup journey. The UI revamp played a key role in scaling the platform, contributing to the user base reaching 2 million by December.”
